There is just so much to do, and see one visit will never be enough, as listed in our previous blog.

One is never sure what to pack and often overpack for your holiday when you don’t know what to expect. With the rising fuel costs and the extra weight and money spent during your travels Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat try and help our visitors take the load off packing.

Packing for your Garden Route Holiday

If you’re staying with us, you can rest assured that packing will be a breeze. People who travel a lot always pack way too much, as they never know what to expect for the first time when visiting new places. Nothing worse than travelling to your destination especially isolated areas for hours and wanting to settle in and putting your feet up and realizing that you are missing something preventing you from settling in.

Forest edge cottages are fully equipped cottages with everything you would expect from an establishment, including some special touches, and things you normally do not expect to see.

Here are a few items that can help put your mind at ease while packing that are available at Forest Edge:

We are fortunate enough to live in close proximity to many beautiful landscapes, which provide us with an abundance of photographic opportunities.

Photography is a popular hobby, and for good reason. It’s relaxing, it’s fun, and it enables us to explore our surroundings in new ways. For those who don’t have much experience with taking photographs or using a camera on their own, you might be wondering where to start. As we are fortunate enough to live in close proximity to many beautiful landscapes, which provide us with an abundance of photographic opportunities.

Landscapes

The Garden Route is a diverse area with many different landscapes, so there are plenty of photographic opportunities for you to capture and share. If you love the beach, the Garden Route has got you covered. The western and southern parts of the Garden Route are home to some beautiful beaches which make for great landscape photography.

The N2 coastal route offers some stunning views of the ocean and its rocky coastline as it winds along between Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay in an almost unbroken line of roadside restaurants and resorts. In between these two popular holiday destinations, you can find some beautiful lagoons that make for spectacular images when photographed from land or even of a boast from the Knysna Lagoon.

The mountainous interior has several pristine lakes nestled amongst lush forests which makes them very popular with hikers and nature lovers alike – they also make fantastic subjects for landscape photographers!

With all of the different forests in the Garden Route, there are many photographic opportunities for you to explore. The forest is a great place to go for a walk or a picnic with family and friends. There are also so many macro and creative opportunities for photography at this destination.

There are approximately 287 bird species with some really special endemic birds, the Knysna Loerie, Woodpecker and the Knysna Warbler.

There is also the Knysna Elephant which is seen from time to time but is hidden deep within the forest as well as lots of other small Antilope, Leopards, Bushpigs, Clawless Otters, Honeybadgers, Bats, Striped Polecats, Vervet Monkeys and so much more.

You can also visit one of our many Wildlife Parks where you can go and see the Big 5 and get an all-around experience, The Garden Route Game Lodge has wonderful day visitor rates for game drives.

The Oyster Festival 2022

For those who did not read our previous blog or have never attended the Knysna Oyster festival, it’s a yearly event and Knysna and the surrounds come alive with visitors, nature lovers and people wanting a sense of adventure.

Knysna Oyster Festival 2022

The festival has been running since 1983 and used to be called the Knysna winter festival. This festival falls over 10 days. With how the world rapidly changed over the past few years with the Pandemic, it is great for us to return to some kind of normality and see the positives in the new normal.

People can now come to stay in our area for the full 10 days, as working remotely has become an integral part of our everyday lives now. Forest Edge does offer WIFI to assist people with making their stay and play visits a breeze. Be connected while disconnecting from the world for the rest of your stay in nature.

Things for Pensioners to do along the Garden Route

They say when you go on Pension you start living again. People find newfound freedom and can do the things they never had time to do or that they really enjoy. We thought we would look into Pensioners specifically and what things there are to do for Pensioners along the Garden Route.

Hiking or Walking:

There are so many hiking trails along the Garden Route and some that are completely flat where you can leisurely take a walk in the forest or surrounds at your own pace without much strain if you are not as mobile as you used to be, and for the super-fit fundis, there are some brilliant trails some with stunning rock pools at the end. It’s like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Drupkelders trail is right outside The Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat Gate. It’s quite a walk but the rock pool at the end is worth the walk. Trails like these are great because they are so close to our establishment you can attempt them at your own pace without having to watch the clock that closely. We can also pack a picnic for you so you can stop off and have a lovely bite to eat while enjoying nature, the fresh air and all that the forest has to offer.

Pristine Beaches:

Most of the beaches along the Garden Route have blue flag status. There are stunning beaches like Noetsie, Heraldsbay, Glentana, Wilderness, Brenton on Sea and of course Buffels Bay on our doorstep. The Buffelsbay beach is only 28km from Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat. It’s a beautiful stretch of beach with warmer water.

For those who enjoy Golf, you can head up a game at either the Knysna Golf Club, the Simola Golf Course or the Pezula Golf Course, all with its own charm and stunning scenery.

Scenic Drives:

There are many drives one can do to experience the beauty of the landscapes that surround Knysna, Rheenendal and the Garden Route. Pensioners can enjoy these drives, with plenty of places to enjoy a meal, or we can pack one for you. The Swartberg Pass, Seven Passes, Montagu Pass are some of the passes you can enjoy during your visit.

You can enjoy the Knysna Lagoon with several boat rides on offer including the famous Featherbed Co. Tour and Lunch at their fantastic restaurant overlooking the Heads. You can also have a peaceful ride up the Touws River, with Wilderness River Safari, where you can enjoy a glass of wine while experiencing beautiful scenery and prolific birdlife.

Birdwatching:

Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat is the perfect stay for any bird-lover, we see everything from the Knysna Loerie, Nerina Trogan, Knysna Woodpeckers and Kingfishers. We also have a resident Fisheagle that is often heard and seen at our establishment. We have ponds with perches for these birds. You can sit on your porch and watch the birds. We are right on the edge of the forest so all the visitors frequent our Gardens making it the perfect place for birders to come and sit and wait for some great views or photographs.

Historic Landmarks and History:

The Garden Route is full of History. There are places to explore and read more about the area and its history.

The history of the Knysna Heads is a great tour as mentioned by the Feather Bed Co. There is the woodcutter’s trail tour. Daleen Matthee Memorial. Bartolomeu Dias Museum in Mossel Bay. Outeniqua Transport Museum in George.

We often have people ask us what there is to do and see directly around us, especially those who have come to seek peace and quiet in nature let us tell you what to expect in a 5km radius from Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat!

As most of you already know we are based on the edge of the Knysna Forest, where you wake up to the rustling of the trees, the singing of the birds and the buzzing of the insects? Closer to nature you could not ask for. This is why our destination has become very popular with Wellness Retreat hosts and people wanting to apply mindfulness.

Our Cabins are also perfectly spaced apart to allow for privacy, and the feeling of being alone and one with nature, each with their own braai and fireplaces and fully equipped. So back to the question if I did not want to leave the Rheenendal Area and wanted to enjoy nature to its fullest. ( For those who have not been to visit us yet, our roads run through forest and farmlands giving you a complete sence of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city) what can I do and see in a 5km radius from Forest Edge Nature Lover’s Retreat?

  • We have our own Meditation Corner, Labyrinth for those who love to wake up and start their day meditating and relaxing

2020 has been a very strange and trying time for not only us local South Africans but the entire world. Being stuck inside for long periods of time has really taken its toll on everyone. People are tired, people have been spent lengthy hours making use of technology helping pass the time and not as active as they would normally be. Nature our medicine is a helpful article in times like these:

We as humans need to stay active, breathe clean fresh air, absorb the sun and spend time in nature to reset and rejuvenate ourselves so we can restore our energy, to deal with the stress of everyday living. We as humans cannot pour from an empty cup.

Most people that have taken a stroll in the woods and put their feet in the streams, feel great when they do so, but research has proven that even 5 minutes in a clean, green space can drastically improve your health.
