Roadmaps - getting to Forest Edge from major cities

It is best to obtain a good roadmap from AA Travel or at a petrol station as it contains the latest information re any closures, roadworks, detours, Toll roads etc that we are not able to keep track of ourselves. Here follows broad pointers to help you plan:

From Johannesburg to Knysna (about 1190km or 12-13 hours’ drive), the most often used route is via Bloemfontein, Graaff Reinet, Uniondale, George. Please do NOT take the Prince Alfred pass between Uniondale and Knysna to try and save time – it may take you up to 4 times longer and the road may have been damaged / closed by rock falls or flooding. If you have checked with AA Travel that it is open, this road which is only a single lane wide in places that wind around tight mountain passes (traffic going uphill has right of way) is a stunning alternative to spend a day meandering through. Rough directions on how to get from Johannesburg to Knysna:

  • Travel on the N1/N12 past Vereeniging and via Kroonstad and keep your eyes open as the highway forks – keep right on the leg towards N1/N12/Bloemfontein
  • Stay on the N1 to Bloemfontein
  • Stay on the N1 to Colesburg
  • Past Colesburg take the N9 towards Graaff Reinet
  • From Graaff Reinet stay on the N9 via Aberdeen and Willowmore towards Uniondale – at night look out for the Ghost between Willowmore and Uniondale.. : )
  • Travel past Uniondale and then loop via George, Wilderness, Sedgefield (see note above re avoiding Prince Alfred pass)
  • Follow the map above to Forest Edge

From Cape Town to Knysna (about 490km or 5-5.5 hours’ drive), the most often used route is via the N2 from Cape Town through George. There is an alternate, scenic mountain route called the Route62, which will take longer but is special even for the most well-travelled. Check road conditions with AA Travel though as mountain passes may be closed due to rock falls or flooding. Rough directions on how to get from Cape Town to Knysna:

  • From Cape Town take the N2 via Somerset West, Caledon and Swellendam
  • Stay on the N2 via Albertinia, Mossel Bay and George
  • Stay on the N2 via Wilderness and Sedgefield
  • Follow the map above to Forest Edge

From Bloemfontein to Knysna (about 760km or 8 hours’ drive), the most often used route is via Graaff Reinet, Uniondale, George, Wilderness, Sedgefield. Please do NOT take the Prince Alfred pass between Uniondale and Knysna to try and save time (see comment above). Rough directions on how to get from Bloemfontein to Knysna:

  • From Graaff Reinet stay on the N9 via Aberdeen and Willowmore towards Uniondale – at night look out for the Ghost between Willowmore and Uniondale.. : )
  • Travel past Uniondale and then loop via George, Wilderness, Sedgefield (see note above re avoiding Prince Alfred pass)
  • Follow the map above to Forest Edge

From Port Elizabeth to Knysna (about 270km or 3 hours’ drive), the most often used route is on the N2. Rough directions on how to get from Port Elizabeth to Knysna:

  • Travel on the N2 (along the Tsitsikamma Mountains) via Humansdorp and the Stormsriver bridge
  • Stay on the N2 via Plettenburg Bay (past Robberg) to Knysna
  • Follow the map above to Forest Edge

From Durban to Knysna (about 1160km or 12-13 hours’ drive), the most often used route follow the N2 via Port Elizabeth. For some reason the flights from Durban to George seem to be expensive – be aware and look for deals and slow periods. Rough directions on how to get from Durban to Knysna:

  • Travel on the N2 via Amanzimtoti to Port Shepstone
  • Stay on the N2 via Kokstad, Mthatha, King Williams’ town to Grahamstown
  • Stay on the N2 via Port Elizabeth, Humansdorp, Plettenburg Bay to Knysna
