TIPS FOR HIKING IN THE GARDEN ROUTE
Knysna and the Garden Route as a whole is a popular destination for hikers who want to explore the Garden Route from Cape Town. This part of South Africa has some of the most beautiful hiking trails in South Africa, so it’s no wonder why so many people choose this route when they’re planning their vacations. If you’re interested in getting out into nature and exploring all that this region has to offer, then it’s time to start planning your trip!

There are many trails along the Garden Route, of which one of the coolest or we think so, anyway 😊 is the one right on our doorstep. “Drupkelders” Once you have obtained your Sanparks permit for the day (their offices are just down the road), you can walk out our gate, turn left, meander down into the forest, and start your hike. When hiking, one must be prepared as you never know what may happen, here are some hiking tips from our side.
- Let our office know where you will be hiking for the day so we know if you are not back where to send help.
- Send a Location Pin from the start of your hike if you have mobile reception to a friend or family member.
- Wear proper hiking gear, and obtain as much information as possible about the terrain you might be hiking, so you are prepared.
- Stay hydrated even in winter, and ensure you have enough water for your hike and even a spare bottle just in case of emergencies.
- Extra layers even in Summer, just in case you might get lost, forests and mountains tend to get really chilly at night.
- Pack snacks
- If you are on any chronic medication, make sure you have some with you.
- Pack a small first aid kit in the event of a stumble or being stung or bitten by something.
